Personal History Maximilian “Max” Anselm was born on Starbase 626 to Aldrick and Adala Anselm in 2355. He is the youngest of 3 kids. He’s currently the only sibling still serving in Starfleet. His brother Jakob and sister Katarina had served under the emergency call to bolster Starfleet during the Dominion War. They were discharged in 2379 after serving 5 years. Max grew up on the relatively quiet Starbase 626. It was a somewhat out of the way place in Federation space, mainly used as jumping off point for space exploration in sector 476. Seeing as it was a quiet place to live, Max wasn’t really exposed to a lot of different species or excitement. His days were spent watching what few starships docked at the station or whatever little mischief he could get into; nothing really too serious. Except for that time he reset the replicators to only produce dead gagh; or the time he changed all the lightning in the promenade to purple or the time he managed to find his way up to Operations only to get hauled out by Security when he set off the alarms. His father Aldrick was a gadget man, repairing and selling different little gadgets from across the Federation and his mother did odd jobs around the station. She was an assistant school teacher at times or worked in the local restaurants as a waitress. They made a modest life together and did everything they could for their kids.
As they got older Jakob and Max started helping out in their father’s shop. They quickly got good with their hands repairing little gadgets and making do with what they could find. There were a few Ferengi on the station so there was always an abundance of junk to fix or steady supply of repair materials. Katarina also got a job at the French cuisine restaurant Cherie. They all went about their merry little lives and the Dominion War started in 2373. Suddenly Starbase 626 became a bustling centre of activity. The station was about halfway between Qo’noS and Earth and as such became a large supply centre. Within 6 months orbital defence platforms were deployed and a pair of Defiant class ships were assigned to the station for defense. Supplies, both Federation and Klingon filled the cargo bays and the starbase was expanded to accommodate them. Starships passed through the station much more often now, on the way to the front lines. A common ship that was seen docking at the station on a fairly regular basis was the USS Honour, a very old Miranda class. What Max didn’t know at the time was the importance this little ship played in winning the war. The Honour belonged to Starfleet Intelligence and carried messages between the Klingon High Council and the office of Federation President deemed too important for subspace. It was during this time that Max became more exposed to the life of a Starfleet officer. As the war progressed Max began to realize how costly this war was in lives and material. Ships were coming back severely damaged after battles with Cardassian and Jem’Hadar ships and the loss of life was enormous. In 2374 all 3 Anselm siblings joined Starfleet. Katarina and Jakob enlisted and were quickly posted to the frontlines. At the time Max wanted a more permanent post in Starfleet and felt that could be provided by joining Starfleet Academy. He didn’t know at the time that enlisting like his siblings could also provide him with a long service career. Regardless he took the first ship back to Earth that he could secure passage on and took his Starfleet oath with 400 other applicants on the steps of Starfleet HQ.
Max finished his campus studies in 2376, 1 year after the war ended. His final 2 years were spent aboard the USS Somme and USS Damascus. The Somme, an old Centaur class vessel which was brought back in service for the war, was mainly a training vessel and he actually spent a lot of his time around Starbase 626 that year. He got the chance to see his parents on a semi regular basis, something neither his brother nor sister got the chance to do. They were posted aboard the USS Vancouver and USS Vengeance on the far side of the Federation from Starbase 626.
His 4th year was spent aboard the USS Damascus. This time he was nowhere near home spending his time patrolling the Federation/Breen border. There were frequent mid sleep wakeups as the ship went to Red Alert over some Breen sabre rattling. Overall there were no major incidents that involved combat. He made some good friends aboard the Damascus and was hoping to get posted to the Sabre class vessel. However as he was finishing his 4th year, the Damascus entered a long awaited mid life overhaul. It was about time as she was 22 months past due. There just weren’t enough ships in the fleet to justify pulling her off the line. The crew was broken up and transferred to other ships. Max finished his final exams and was transferred to the USS Passchendaele as Ensign Maximilian Anselm, a junior member of the Tactical/Security team.
His first 2 years of service on the Passchendaele was fairly quiet. They spent a lot of time performing scientific research of the clustered nebulas in sector 85532. While it was boring at times it allowed Max to ease into his new position on the ship and practice his phaser skills, tactical manoeuvres and security procedures. Not to say the year was totally without action. They did help break up a smuggling ring and fought off a couple of pirate ships attacking local cargo ships. As he became more confident his superior officers began sending him on away missions.
During the last few months of 2380 they were sent to the Cordillia system to help keep the peace in a newly democratic system. The Security department was heavily involved in helping the local police. Max spent a lot of time on the surface “walking the beat” and got to know the streets fairly well. The local shop owners got to know him by name and he would frequent the produce shops often and bring home some fresh fruits and vegetables. On the actual Election Day, Max and his security team were charged with securing a local polling station. Anti-democratic groups belonging to the previous regime’s faction had been more and more active during the run up to the elections and the Passchendaele’s crew were under order to keep a look out for any suspicious activities near the polling station. Both the local police and Starfleet were expecting trouble on this momentous day. It came about mid day as Max was exiting the polling station after checking out the inside of the building. He spotted the hover car out of the corner of his eye approaching at too fast a speed and erratic course. He quickly warned the local police who began broadcasting on the hailing frequency ordering the car to turn around or land immediately. Their hails went unanswered and a few seconds later the hover car crashed nose first into the ferrocrete surface and exploded, throwing shrapnel everywhere and blowing out windows for 5 square city blocks. Three members of the Passchendaele were killed instantly in the explosion along with 6 Cordillian Police officers. Max was seriously wounded when his left leg was severed and his lung was punctured by flying debris. He was quickly beamed back up to the ship and spent the next 3 hours in surgery while they repaired his lung and the damaged leg. They were unable to reattach his leg.
Max spent the next 3 months learning to walk again with his prosthetic leg. During his rehabilitation he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and Assistant Chief Tactical Officer. He was still restricted to limited duties as his lung just wasn’t healing correctly and he was forced to heal the ‘old fashioned’ way by resting and taking it easy. Finally he was able to resume his full duties and jumped into his new position with a new sense of zeal and enthusiasm. He worked hard and spent a lot of time training his teams on the exact circumstance that he was injured in. It allowed him to heal emotionally after the explosion and realize that there really wasn’t much more he could have done. There was no opportunity or ability to try to bring down the bomb laden hover car and it happened in a few seconds.
During this time the Passchendaele had been sent on a deep space exploration mission and was far from Federation territory. Max spent the next 5 years as Assistant Chief and knew that when the ship finally got back to Federation space his chance at running his own department would come. Finally in 2385 the Passchendaele returned from her mission and put into Starbase 626 for overhaul. Max took the time to spend it with his family while he waited for his next posting. He didn’t have to wait long. About 3 weeks into his 6 week leave he was assigned to the USS Harbinger as her Chief of Tactical/Security.
